Your garage door makes up a significant percentage of your house's exterior. A well-maintained garage door always enhances a home's curb appeal, but a dented door will also detract from it.

You have a few options for repairing dents in your garage door. The best choice will depend on the extent of damage to the door. Here is an introduction to garage door dent repair for homeowners.

Minor Dent Repair

Minor dents can easily crop up when a stray ball or bicycle makes contact with your door. Dents that are roughly the size of your fist or smaller, and no more than a few inches deep, can often be repaired with DIY methods. If you're comfortable trying to fix small garage door dents on your own, you can try to remove the dent using a few simple steps.

First, fill a bucket with warm water and mild dish detergent and use a sponge to clean the affected area thoroughly. Next, cut a piece of aluminum foil large enough to cover the dented area and hold the edges. Move a lighter across the foil to heat the dented area.

Finally, remove the foil and spray the dent with a can of compressed air while holding the can upside down. This will release frigid carbon dioxide onto the dent, and the drastic change in temperature may be enough to snap the dented metal back into place.

Major Dent Repair

If you've accidentally backed into your garage door, you're likely dealing with more than a minor dent. Large dents take extra effort to repair because they may indicate damage to the sublayers of your garage door. A dent that has bent one or more panels will usually require the panels to be replaced. This is a job best left to a professional to avoid injury or further damaging your garage door.

To replace a dented panel, your garage door technician will first lift the door and place vice grips under the rollers to hold it in place. The technician will then use a winch to loosen cable tension near the panel. The hinges above the damaged panel are removed with a power drill, the panel is removed, and a new one can be slid into place.

No matter what type of dent you're dealing with, your local garage door contractors can return your garage door to like-new condition.
